Review of Linux Compatibility

The Alienware 17 R3 is a Laptop and was successfully tested in configuration

DMI: Alienware Alienware 17 R3/Alienware 17 R3, BIOS 1.2.3 11/11/2015

under Manjaro Linux with Linux kernel version 4.9.0-1-MANJARO.

The biggest Linux issues with the Alienware 17 R3 are:

  • sound blaster card (many distros have no sound):
in Manjaro sound works but there are many kernel and ALSA errors. The driver is no fully compatible and there are random volume spikes. Once in a while, sound locks down and the only way to unlock it is to boot into windows…
also jacks outputs don’t work, so it’s not possible to use headphones or speakers.

  • ACPI kernel errors are frequent in the background, but on the user end they are not felt so much. Hibernation and suspend works, although often it creates errors after resume. Also screen locks itself after few minutes can happen and is not possible to unlock the laptop by any means. Only physical key shutdown and reboot is possible.
  • Bluetooth doesn’t work at all (no bluetooth device detected)

Kernels from 4.3 and up are booting fine. Some better sound results are on kernel 4.9 but main bugs are still present.
Other then that laptop is usable on Linux. In overall, I would give 3 star rating for compatibility.
