Review of Linux Compatibility

The Intel NUC5i5RYH (NUC = Next Unit of Computing) is a tiny but powerful PC equipped with HD graphics chipset, WiFi, Bluetooth, Sound, and Gigabit LAN. The PC was successfully tested in configuration

 DMI:                  /NUC5i5RYB, BIOS RYBDWi35.86A.0350.2015.0812.1722 08/12/2015

under Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with Linux kernel version 4.4.0-21-generic. The installation of Ubuntu 16.04 ran flawlessly. All hardware components (LAN, WiFi, Sound, Video, Bluetooth) were recognized automatically.

Equipment

The NUC comes in a small blue box and is shipped together with a VESA fixation + screws to mount the PC at the back of a monitor, and a power supply transformer with adapters for multiple power sockets (UK, US, EUR, …).

The size of the NUC5i5RYH is 4.52″x4.37″x1.9″. The version with the “H” at the end is a bit higher and therefore has space for an additional SSD or 2.5″ drive at the top of the box, while the “K” version has only space for the M.2 SSD (see below). The mainboard itself is identical, only the housing is different. The front side is equipped with a two USB ports and audio out. The back side has a Gigabit LAN connection, the power supply socket, two USB ports, Display Port socket and a mini-HDMI port (a standard HDMI cable will not fit!). The NUC5i5RYH can also be secured with a Kensington lock (at the side).

Hard Drive / SSD

All mainboards of the NUC5i5RY(H/K) are equipped with a M.2 slot which is used for SSDs on a chip. One can mount M.2 SSDs with dimensions 22×42 mm, 22×60 mm, or 22×80 mm. The K edition of the NUC5i5RY provides mounting space for an 2.5 inch SATA hard disk or SSD beneath the top plate of the box:

The test server was equipped with a 22×80 SSD, i.e. the 256 GB Transcend TS256GMTS800 and 16 GB RAM (2 bars of 8GB DDR3L-TAM, 1600MHz). The space for the additional 2.5 inch hard disk was left empty. The system was using the Transcend M.2 SSD only.

CPU and Bios settings

The NUC5i5RYH comes with an embedded dual core Intel i5-5250U CPU which has 1.60GHz which corresponds to 3192.74 bogomips per thread (4 threads). The mini-PC is equipped with the Intel Visual Bios, which is a graphical user interface to the BIOS, can be controlled by keyboard and mouse. It provides access to file system and therefore can be used to upgrade the BIOS from a file on a connected USB stick.

Ubuntu 16.04 can be installed with the default BIOS setting. There was no need to change anything:

The Ubuntu installation automatically recognized the Intel HD graphics chipset and
