Review of Linux Compatibility

The HP Officejet 5610 is a USB connected All-in-One printer. It has the USB ID 03f0:4f11

Bus 003 Device 010: ID 03f0:4f11 Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet 5600 (USBHUB)

and is automatically recognized by the Linux kernel:

usb 3-2: new full-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd
usb 3-2: New USB device found, idVendor=03f0, idProduct=4f11
usb 3-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 3-2: Product: Officejet 5600 series
usb 3-2: Manufacturer: HP
usb 3-2: SerialNumber: CN7xxxxxxxxxxx
usb 3-2: ep 0x82 - rounding interval to 64 microframes, ep desc says 80 microframes
usblp 3-2:1.1: usblp1: USB Bidirectional printer dev 10 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x4F11
usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp

Under Linux the HP Officejet 5610 is fully supported by the hplip Open Source printer drivers.
Under Ubuntu this driver can be installed via the apt-get package manager:

sudo apt-get install hplip hpijs hplip-gui

Otherwise, the drivers can be downloaded from HPLIP web site. The downloaded files (eventually after unpacking them) can be installed (as root):

sh hplip-3.13.11.run

Under Ubuntu this step is not necessary (because installation is done by the package management system) and one can immediately skip to the configuration step:

sudo hp-setup

Scanner:

If the scanner is found, one can scan with the console program

hp-scan

After placing a sheet of paper on the scan unit and presses the scan button on the printer, a file “hpscan001.png” is created in the home directory.

The scanner can also be used together with XSane, which can be installed under Ubuntu by:

sudo apt-get install xsane
