Review of Linux Compatibility

The Acer Aspire VN7-571G-56N0 is a 15.6 inch notebook with the following hardware characteristics:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-5200U (up to 2.70 GHz, with Turbo Boost 2.0, 4 MB Smart Cache)
  • 8 GB DDR3L-RAM
  • 500 GB SATA Hybrid harddisk 5400 U/min + 8 GB SSD
  • 2 GB DDR3 nVidia GeForce 840M
  • DVD Double Layer Super Multi drive
  • WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n ac
  • 10/100/1000 Mbit Ethernet
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • HD webcam and internal microphone
  • illuminated keyboard with number block
  • 3 x USB 3.0 / 1 x HDMI / 1 x headphone/microphone combo / 1 x Ethernet

The device was tested on March 16, 2015 under Ubuntu 14.10 with kernel version 3.16:

In general the notebook has good Linux support, however, some hardware issues were identified:

WiFi / Bluetooth (major incompatibility):

No driver for the used chipset was available during the date of our testing. Support for the chipset was already implemented in the Linux kernel 4.0, however, no matching firmware for rev. 20 of the hardware was available.

Furthermore, Bluetooth is not supported, probably also due to the missing Firmware.

Touchpad (medium incompatibility)

The touchpad of the Acer Aspire VN7-571G-56N0 is not fully recognized and therefore the driver is not correctly configured. For example, the right button click of the softbutton is not supported, hence no Drag&Drop is possible. Furthermore, the touchpad is not responsive after restarting the notebook from hybernation mode. But, the driver can be configured manually . The necessary configuration steps are described at askubuntu.com.

Battery (“annoying” incompatibility):

It was identified that the battery lasts significantly shorter under Ubuntu. If the laptop is used under Windows the battery lasts for 7-9 hours, while under Ubuntu only 3-4 hours are possible.

The internal battery status reports “fully charged” only if the battery was charde from at least 60% of its capacity. If the battery is charged at a status of less than 60% the Ubuntu battery monitor always reports a discharging of the battery. This could be due to a hardware incompatiblity.

Notes:

Dual-Boot with Windows 8.1 was not recognized by the Ubuntu installer (boot selector was not configured correctly by Ubuntu). In such cases it is recommended to use the program Boot Repair. If this does not help it is also possible to manually enter Boot entries in the Bios.

Similar to other notebooks with two graphic chipsets it is recommended to additionally install bumblebee.
