Review of Linux Compatibility

The Brother HL3140CW is a color printer which can be connected via USB or be used via WiFi. Brother provides Linux drivers for this printer on its homepage for download at. The driver is available as RPM and as DEB file.

Under Ubuntu this driver can be installed in the following way. First, it should be assured that necessary dependencies for the driver are fulfilled and needed directories are available:

sudo apt-get install cups csh
sudo mkdir -p /var/spool/lpd/
sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/cups/model/

The driver files can be downloaded e.g. with wget:

wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/hl3040cnlpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb
wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/hl3040cncupswrapper-1.1.2-2.i386.deb

and installed with the package management system:

sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture *3040cnlpr*.deb
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture *3040cncupswrapper*.deb
sudo apt-get -f install

Afterwards, the printer configuration should be started with

system-config-printer

which now should automatically recognize the HL-3040CW.
