Review of Linux Compatibility

The Brother QL-700 is a label printer, which is fully supported under Linux and its CUPS printer drivers. The necessary CUPS driver can be downloaded from the Brother web page.

It is important that “Editor Lite” mode of the QL-700 is deactivated in order to use it with the CUPS driver. This “Editor Lite” mode can be deactivated by pressing the button at the front side of the QL-700 until the LED turns off.

On Debian based Linux system (e.g. under Ubuntu) the driver can be installed with the following set of commands. First, the CUPS driver must be installed by:

sudo apt-get install cups csh

If a 64 bit system is used it also might be necessary to install the 32 bit version of the libstdc library:

sudo apt-get install lib32stdc++6

The following directories must be available:

sudo mkdir -p /var/spool/lpd/
sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/cups/model/

Afterwards, the driver can be downloaded in a freshly created directory:

mkdir -p ~/Downloads/brother/ql-700/
cd ~/Downloads/brother/ql-700/

and installation of these drivers is initiated by:

sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture *lpr*.deb
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture *cupswrapper*.deb

The label printer can now be configured after plugging in the QL-700:

One response to “Brother QL-700 (Label Printer, USB)”

  • Brian says:

    While it does print, the image seems to be scaled down; i.e. an image onscreen that fills the label to the edge is printed with 6-8 mm margin. When printing the same image from Windows, the label is filled properly. Has anyone else noticed this and perhaps found a solution? It doesn’t matter what label size I am using; the printed image is always reduced.
