Review of Linux Compatibility

The Edimax EU-4306 is a USB 3.0 adapter, which provides a Gigabit Ethernet connection. The adapter bases on the Asix 88179 chipset, which is supported under Linux since kernel version 3.9 by the kernel module ax88179_178a. This driver is loaded automatically, when the stick is connected:

ASIX USB Ethernet Adapter:v1.4.0 10:01:27 Jun 26 2013

ax88179_178a 4-2:1.0 (unregistered net_device): mtu 1500
ax88179_178a 4-2:1.0 eth0: register 'ax88179_178a' at 0:14.0-2, ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 Gigibit Ethernet, 00:11:22:33:44:55
usbcore: registered new interface driver ax88179_178a
IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth2: link is not ready
IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth2: link is not ready
ax88179_178a 4-2:1.0 eth2: ax88179_178a - Link status is: 1
ax88179_178a 4-2:1.0 eth2: Write medium type: 0x013f
IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth2: link becomes ready
ax88179_178a 4-2:1.0 eth2: link up, 1000Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0xC1E1

and creates an additional (eth) network device.

Older kernel versions do not include drivers for the ASIX 88179. However, for such kernels Linux driver can be downloaded from Asix but have to be compiled and installed by hand:

cd /tmp
aptitude install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
tar -xjf AX88179_178A_LINUX_DRIVER_v1.9.0_SOURCE.tar.bz2
cd AX88179_178A_LINUX_DRIVER_v1.9.0_SOURCE/
sudo make install
