Review of Linux Compatibility

The Edimax EW-7811UTC is a WiFi USB stick, which supports connections according to IEEE 802.11ac standard but also 802.11n connections. The small USB adapter bases on the Realtek RTL8811AU and has the USB ID 7392:a811

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 7392:a811 Edimax Technology Co., Ltd

The stick is recognized by the Linux kernel in the following way:

usb 1-1.2: new high-speed USB device number 4 using dwc_otg
usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=7392, idProduct=a811
usb 1-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-1.2: Product: 802.11n WLAN Adapter
usb 1-1.2: Manufacturer: Realtek
usb 1-1.2: SerialNumber: 00000000000

but currently no driver is included in the standard kernel for this stick.
However, a open source driver is available from github, and can be installed (under Ubuntu) in the following way (assumed that all buid-essentials were already installed):

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential git
git clone
cd ~/rtl8812au
sudo make install
sudo modprobe 8812au

This compiles, installs and loads the 8812au kernel module, which supports the Realtek RTL8811AU chipset.

Alternativley, there is also a vendor Linux driver provided by Edimax for download. The installation of this driver under Linux is explained in detail in the Edimax Manual.
