Review of Linux Compatibility

The Canon MG5550 is a all-in-one printer, which can also be used under Linux. The printer has the USB ID 04a9:1771

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 04a9:1771 Canon, Inc.

and, if connected via USB, is recognized by the Linux kernel with the following output:

usb 1-6: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=1771
usb 1-6: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-6: Product: MG5500 series
usb 1-6: Manufacturer: Canon
usb 1-6: SerialNumber: 917xxx

Printing can be done with Gutenprint drivers or with the drivers provided by Canon. Gutenprint supports the model since at least version 5.2.10 via the bjc-PIXMA-MG5550 driver. The Gutenprint driver should be included in most latest Linux distributions (e.g. Ubuntu 14.04).

Alternatively, the drivers provided by Canon can be used. (This step is only recommended if printing with the Gutenprint drivers should fail). The following driver packages are needed:
