Review of Linux Compatibility

The Ricoh SP 112 is a cheap USB monochrome Laser printer.
This model is currenlty not listed as supported by the Openprinting Rico Linux printer.

At the moment only an experimental Linux driver is available, which can be found at https://github.com/madlynx/ricoh-sp100/. This driver first needs to be downloaded and unpacked by executing the following commands in a terminal

cd /tmp/
wget https://github.com/madlynx/ricoh-sp100/archive/master.zip
unzip master.zip
cd ricoh-sp100-master/

The directory contains a script, which checks if all requirements for the driver are met. This script is started by

./check-requirements

pbmtojbg [REQUIRED] : No
identify [REQUIRED] : Yes, version: Version: ImageMagick 6.7.7-10 2014-03-06 Q16 http://www.imagemagick.org
Ghostscript [REQUIRED] : Yes, version: 9.10
ps2write [REQUIRED] : Yes
pbmraw [REQUIRED] : Yes
inotify-wait [optional] : No

If a “REQUIRED” program is not available, it needs to be installed separately in order to successfully use the driver.

In a next step copy `pstoricohddst-gdi` to the cups’ filters directory, which is normally loacted in /usr/lib/cups/filter:

cp pstoricohddst-gdi /usr/lib/cups/filter/

and set the correct user rights:

chown root:root /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoricohddst-gdi

Afterwards, the printer can be added to the system through CUPS’ web interface, normally available at http://localhost:631/ in the web browser. Click ‘Choose file’ and select one of provided PPD-files.

The workaround presented above doesn’t work in my case (Linux Mint 17 on a HP 255 laptop). Generates a red light error.

I’ve tried each of the possible Ricoh printer drivers, existing in the system. The closest thing to printing I got was feeding blank pages after sending a document to the printer.

Linux users, avoid this printer at all cost. It’s a waste of your time and energy.

“First of all, you bought wrong printer :) This “driver” is not in
production state. It was only an expirement.”

Do NOT buy this printer if you intend to use it with Linux.

  • jonas says:

not recommend to buy caused by driver there, but If you want to use it anyway theres a workaround, take a look at https://github.com/madlynx/ricoh-sp100.
It works like a charm for me.

    • LHG-Team says:

Hi jonas. Thank you for the link to the Linux driver. We added an installation instruction to the Rico SP 112 hardware description.
