Review of Linux Compatibility

The Lenovo Ideapad Z710 has a very good Linux support (e.g. tested with Xubuntu 13.10) and can also be bought without pre-installed MS Windows.

The Bios of the Z710 can be accessed by an additional buttons, which is next to the power button. In the BIOS, the secure-boot option needs to be deactivated and UEFI has to be switched to legacy-boot, to install Linux on the Z710. To start from a Live Disc (USB or DVD) one has to set the following kernel parameter to boot successfully

nomodeset

see instructions.
Otherwise, the screen might stay black (or dark purple). After the installation with correct graphic drivers (it is recommended to install bumblebee drivers on the device) the kernel paramter “nomodeset” can be omitted.
At least version 319 of the NVIDIA drivers should be used to support the GT740M grafic chipset.

WiFi

If the WiFi connection drops regularly, the WiFi drivers should be replaced with a newer version. The latest version of the iwlwifi kernel modules should be used in this case. An installation instruction can be found at: askubuntu.com.
