Review of Linux Compatibility

The Brother MFC-J4510DW is a All-in-One device, which is fully usable under Linux thanks to the Linux drivers provided by Brother. In the following the installation is explained for Ubuntu based distributions (installation under Debian is similar, but has to be executed as user “root” and therefore does not need the sudo addition for the commands).

If a 64 bit Linux system is used, the package lib32stdc++6 has to be installed for the Brother drivers:

sudo apt-get install lib32stdc++6 csh tcsh

Afterwards, the driver can be downloaded from the Brother homepage heruntergeladen werden:

sudo wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/mfcj4510dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
sudo wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/mfcj4510dwlpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb

and the printer spool directory needs to be created:

sudo mkdir -p /var/spool/lpd/MFCJ4510DW

The drivers can be installed with the package manager:

sudo dpkg -i --force-all mfcj4510dwlpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i --force-all mfcj4510dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386.deb

The installation of the scanner needs the brscan4 drivers, which are provided by Brother for download:

sudo wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/brscan4-0.4.2-1.amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i --force-all brscan4-0.4.2-1.amd64.deb

Afterwards, the configuration can be carried out. The configuration program needs the WiFi IP of the scanner:

sudo brsaneconfig4 -a name=Brother model=MFC-J4510DW ip=HERE_THE_IP_OF_THE_SCANNER
