Review of Linux Compatibility

The ZyXEK NWD6605 is a WiFi USB stick, which supports wireless transmissions according to IEEE 802.11ac standard. The stick has the USB ID 0586:3426

Bus 003 Device 005: ID 0586:3426 ZyXEL Communications Corp.

and bases on the Realtek RTL8812AU chipset. Hence, this stick is identical (except for the design of the housing) with the Edimax EW-7822UAC.

Until now, no drivers for the NWD6605 are included in the standard Linux kernel. However, Edimax provides drivers for its compatible version (EW-7822UAC_linux_v4.2.2_7502.20130517.tar.gz), which has to be patched and then can be compiled by hand. It is necessary to add the USB ID of the Zyxel NWD6605 to the EDIMAX driver. The necessary patched version is available at Wikidevi for download.

Alternatively, a open source Linux driver is available at https://github.com/abperiasamy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux for download (a ZIP file with the driver can be downloaded at the linked web page). The downloaded file needs to be unpacked and can be compiled and isntalled afterwards by:

cd Downloads/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux-master
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe 8812au

The compiled kernel module 8812au.ko is then loaded automatically if the stick is plugged in.
