Review of Linux Compatibility

The Huawei E303 is a wireless mobile broadband modem, which supports 2G, 3G, HSPA, HSUPA, HSDPA, HSPA, UMTS, WCDMA, GSM, GPRS, and EDGE connections.

At least two different versions off the stick are available. Both of them are fully supported under Linux, but have different USB IDs. Each stick has a storage mode and a surfstick mode. If the stick is plugged in it is normally in storage mode in order to access the drivers, which are stored on the stick. Depending on the configuration of the Linux distributions, the mode needs to be switched to surfstick mode by hand or this switch is done automatically.

Version 12d1:1f01

This version of the Stick has the USB ID 12d1:1f01:

Bus 001 Device 009: ID 12d1:1f01 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

in memory mode. The stick can be switched to modem mode with the following usb_modeswitch command:

sudo usb_modeswitch -v 12d1 -p 1f01 -M '55534243123456780000000000000a11062000000000000100000000000000'

Afterwards, it is in surfstick mode and shows the USB-ID 12d1:14db:

Bus 001 Device 010: ID 12d1:14db Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

Version 12d1:1446

This version of the stick has the USB ID 12d1:1446 in memory device mode:

Bus 001 Device 009: ID 12d1:1446 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E1552/E1800/E173 HSPA modem

It can be switched to surfstick mode by

sudo usb_modeswitch -v 12d1 -p 1446 -M '55534243123456780000000000000011062000000100000000000000000000'

and then has the USB ID 12d1: 1436:

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 12d1:1436 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

In order to let the stick switch automatically to the surfstick mode, the following line is needed in the file “/etc/udev/rules.d/70-usb-modeswitch.rules”:

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="12d1", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1446", RUN+="/usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch -v 12d1 -p 1446 -M '55534243123456780000000000000011062000000100000000000000000000'"

Some versions of the Huawei E303 include linux drivers. If the stick is in storage device mode, the internal memory can be accessed and the installation script located on the script can be executed:

cd /media/HiLink/linux_mbb_install
sudo sh install
