Review of Linux Compatibility

The Samsung Xpress C410W is a color laser printer with a resolution of up to 2400×600 dpi, but without duplex funcitonality. The printer can be connected via USB 2.0 or network (Ethernet 10/100 MBit and WiFi).

The printer is fully supported under Linux. Samsung provides Linux drivers for download, which are compatible with at least the following Linux distributions:

  • RedHat Enterprise Linux WS 4 – 6 (32/64 bit)
  • Fedora 5 – 15 (32/64 bit)
  • OpenSuSE 10.2 – 11.4 (32/64 bit)
  • Mandriva 2007 – 2010 (32/64 bit)
  • Ubuntu 6.06 – 11.04 (32/64 bit)
  • SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, 11 (32/64 bit)
  • Debian 4.0 – 6.0 (32/64 bit)

The downloaded driver needs to be unpacked and installed with the following commands:

tar -xzf ULD_Linux_V1.00.06.tar.gz
cd uld
sudo ./install.sh

Afterwards, the printer is available in the CUPS printer system and can be configured system wide (e.g. via web frontend at URL http://localhost:631).

I am using Ubuntu 14.10 and have been trying to connect this printer without success.

The instructions above didn’t work. I don’t know how to connect the printer – I could

not connect neither with WLAN nor LAN.

      Hello Klaus,
can you print if the Samsung Xpress C410W is connected via USB? This could give us a hint if it is really a driver or a network configuration issue.

    • Klaus says:

In the end, I managed to get the printer working – the problem was, that the instructions above are only half the story.

Once the driver is installed as described above while the printer is on and waiting to be setup, one needs to find out what’s the ipp://… required for the setup and connection via CUSP and this was the cumbersome task. Even so I could “see” the printer as an available WLAN device, I was not able to connect.

I found the ipp when I figured out about an IP that allows to get access to the “printer menu” = SyncThru Web Service where the ipp address is written down.

I am not able to provide a proper description as I don’t really understood what I was doing. Maybe there’s an expert out there who can write down complete installation and setup instructions step-by-step. I am sure setup can be done in 5 minutes provided there are complete instructions.
