Review of Linux Compatibility

The D-Link DWA-552 is a PCI WiFi card with 802.11n support. The card exists in different versions:

Rev A1 (168c:0023)

The version A1 of the DWA-552 bases on the Atheros AR5008-3NG chipset and has the PCI ID 168c:0023:

05:02.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5008
Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
Subsystem: D-Link System Inc Device 3a6d
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 168, IRQ 18
	Memory at fbde0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
	Capabilities: [40] #80 [0000]
	Kernel driver in use: ath9k
	Kernel modules: ath9k

This version is supported by the Linux kernel since version 2.6.25. The kernel module ath9k is used as a driver.

Rev A2 (168c:0029)

The version A2 bases on the Atheros AR9223 chipset and has the PCI ID 168c:0029

06:02.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR922X Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0029] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Atheros Communications Inc. Device [168c:2091]
        Kernel driver in use: ath9k
        Kernel modules: ath9k

The necessary driver is part of the Linux kernel since kernel version 2.6.27. The kernel module ath9k is used for this version of the DWA-552 as driver.

Rev A3

Furthermore, a version A3 exists, which also bases on the Atheros AR9223 chipset. The PCI ID is of this version is not known. However, this card is also supported by the ath9k kernel module.

PCI-ID 168c:ff1d

An additional version of the DWA-552 with the PCI ID 168c:ff1d was identified. It is not clear if this version is intended for sale or if it was a developer version of the board. The card is identified by the Linux kernel in the following way:

05:05.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5008 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
Subsystem: Atheros Communications Inc. Device ee1c
Flags: 66MHz, medium devsel, IRQ 17
	Memory at fbdf0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
	Capabilities: [40] #80 [0000]

but the card is not supported by the ath9k kernel module.
