Review of Linux Compatibility
The Qnap TS-420 is a 4 bay NAS server, which can be equipped with up to 4 TB SATA I/II HDD per bay. The Server has a
- 1.6 GHz CPU
- 512 MB RAM
- 2xUSB3 ports
- 2xUSB2 ports
- 2x eSATA ports
- 2x Gigabit Ethernet
The TS-420 is not equipped with a LCD in contrast to the TS-421.
The front of the TS-420 has four slots for the four harddisks drawers. These slots can be opened and closed without the need of screws. Furthermore, a USB 2.0 port is available at the front of the housing. All other connections are located at the back of the TS-420. The TS-420 is delivered with all necessary screws for mounting the harddisks inside the harddisk drawers and with an external power supply:
Qnap provides a Linux based firmware for the TS-420, which supports HDDs with EXT3, EXT4 journaling filesystems. Furthermore, Qnap provides a bunch of software packages that can enhance the abilites of the system (Web server, mail server, SQL server, installation of Content Management Systems (Joomla, WordPress), and much more). See details on the Qnap homepage.
Linux compatibility is provided due to the support of several (open) protocols for data exchange: CIFS/SMB, AFP (v3.3), NFS (v3), FTP, FTPS, SFTP, TFTP, HTTP(S), Telnet, SSH, iSCSI, SNMP, SMTP, SMSC, TFTP.
Using the QNAP TS-420 as a NFS server in a Linux network is very simple. The included NFS server can be configured easily via the TS-420 web frontend to make this directory available in the network environment:
These directories can be mounted by Linux Clients in the standard way.
It is even possible to install a standard Debian distribution on the TS-420. The installation steps are described at http://www.cyrius.com/debian/kirkwood/qnap/ts-41x/tips/.
The TS-420 is delivered without a manual, and searches for a DHCP server during its booting in order to request a valid IP address. In order to access the TS-420 per network connection the DHCP server of the network has to be configured in a way to provide correct IP addresses to the interfaces with the MAC adresses, which are given on the stickers, which are on the backside of the TS-420 housing near the Ethernet ports. By doing so, the TS-420 web desktop can be reached under this IP address in a web browser.
The latest QNAP firmware 4.0.7 bases on a Linux 2.6.33 kernel:
Linux version 18.104.22.168 (root at NasX86-14) (gcc version 4.2.1) #1 Sat Apr 12 05:19:52 CST 2014
and supports the following file systems:
nodev sysfs nodev rootfs nodev bdev nodev proc nodev tmpfs nodev sockfs nodev usbfs nodev pipefs nodev anon_inodefs nodev rpc_pipefs nodev inotifyfs nodev configfs nodev devpts ext2 nodev ramfs nodev nfsd nodev mqueue ext3 nodev fuse fuseblk nodev fusectl vfat nodev autofs ext4 ufsd iso9660 udf nodev nfs nodev nfs4 nodev cifs nodev smbfs
The prozessor of the TS-420 is a Feroceon 88F6282:
