Review of Linux Compatibility

The hardware of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 is supported by Linux and is recognized automatically, e.g. under Ubuntu 12.04, for most components. Only the DVB-T chipset and the second graphic chipset, which bases on the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M needs additional configuration. Although the graphic chipset is supported under Linux, the parallel usage of both graphic cards is not configured automatically and can be complicated for beginners:

The Intel HD Graphics 3000 is automatically supported by Linux and the notebook can be used with this chipset without the need for configuration. However, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 provides the possibility to switch between the two graphic chipsets, to work with the lower power-consuming Intel chipset for standard applications and switching to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M in case of higher performance needs (so called Nvidia Optimus technology).
In order to switch between the two chipsets the software bumblebee and bbswitch needs to be installed and configured under Linux.

The installation of Bumblebee under Ubuntu is explained at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee. To use this technique on the Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 a modified version of Bumblebee is necessary: https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bbswitch/blob/hack-lenovo/README.md.

After installing Bumblebee the programs with high performance needs can be start by the tool “optirun”, in order to use the 3D acceleration of the NVIDIA chipset, e.g. by

optirun glxspheres

Ethernet

The Gigabit Ethernet chipset uses the Broadcom BCM57781 and is automatically recognized and supported.

DVB-T

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 is equipped with a DVB-T tuner which is internally connected via USB:

Thie tuner is supported by a Linux driver provided by Avermedia. This driver needs to be compiled by hand and is not part of an Ubuntu 12.04 installation.
