Review of Linux Compatibility

The Asus NX1101 is a gigabit ethernet PCI network card. It is delivered with a low-profile and high-profile slot blinds. The card has the PCI ID 10ec:8161

01:09.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8161] (rev 10)

and is supported under Linux by the kernel module r8168. However, there are several reports of Linux users where the driver is not running stable but produces several types of error messages, e.g.

r8169: eth0: link up

In this situation it might help to compile the driver by hand from its latest source code:

cd /usr/src
tar jxvf r8168-8.032.00.tar.bz2
cd r8168-8.032.00
make clean modules
make install
depmod -a
echo "blacklist r8169" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-network.conf
update-initramfs -u
