Review of Linux Compatibility

The LogiLink WL0084B is different from the WL0084A and should not be mixed up. Both sticks use different chipsets and hence different Linux drivers. Fortunately, both sticks have slightly different housing and hence can be distinguished (the WL0084B stick is longer than the WL0084A).

The WL0084B uses the chipsatz Ralink rt5370 and has the USB ID 148f:5370

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter

It is supported by Linux, but not by the standard kernel. Instead, the driver has to be compiled by hand. If not already installed, the package build-essentials has to be installed under Ubuntu Distributions in order to compile the driver:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms

Afterwards, the driver for the WL0084B can be downloaded and unpacked

wget media.cdn.ubuntu-de.org/forum/attachments/42/20/4365112-Ralink_5370sta-2.5.0.3_dkms.tar.gz
sudo tar xvf 4365112-Ralink_5370sta-2.5.0.3_dkms.tar.gz -C /usr/src

The creation of the driver is performed by dkms:

sudo dkms add -m Ralink_5370sta -v 2.5.0.3
sudo dkms build -m Ralink_5370sta -v 2.5.0.3
sudo dkms install -m Ralink_5370sta -v 2.5.0.3

Furthermore, a configuration file is necessary. This file can be created in the following way:

sudo mkdir -p /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA
sudo cp /usr/src/Ralink_5370sta-2.5.0.3/src/RT2870STA.dat /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA

Loading of the compiled module rt5370sta is carried out by the command

sudo modprobe rt5370sta
