LogiLink WL0084A (WiFi, Nano Adapter, USB 2.0, 150MBit)
Review of Linux Compatibility
The LogiLink WL0084A shoud not be mixed up with the version WL0084B because both versions use the different chipsets. Fortunately, both sticks can be distunguised due to their different housings (the WL0084B stick is longer than the WL0084A).
There are two revisions of the WL0084A. Both use the Realtek rtl8188cus chipset. The version 1 has thee USB ID 0bda:8176
Bus 002 Device 010: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter
bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level)
idVendor 0x0bda Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
and is supported by the kernel module rtl8192cu. Additionally, the stick needs a firmware file that can be installed under Ubuntu by
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
Without the firmware file the loading of the driver will produce the following error message:
rtl8192cu 1-1.2:1.0: usb_probe_interface
rtl8192cu 1-1.2:1.0: usb_probe_interface - got id
rtl8192cu: MAC address: 00:02:72:b5:b8:e1
rtl8192cu: Board Type 0
rtl8192cu:rtl92cu_init_sw_vars():<0-0> Failed to request firmware!
rtlwifi:rtl_usb_probe():<0-0> Can't init_sw_vars.
usbcore: registered new interface driver rtl8192cu
The version 10 of the WL0084A has the USB ID 0bda:8179
Bus 001 Device 010: ID 0bda:8179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Both versions can be distinguised by the model number. which is printed on the packaging.
A installation instruction for revision 10 can be found at ubuntuusers.de (in german).
