Review of Linux Compatibility

The Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190 is a compact, in large parts Linux compatible desktop PC. The PC was tested with Ubuntu 12.10 and the Linux kernel of version 3.5.0-23. Unfortunately, the WiFi chipset used in the IdeaCentre Q190 is not yet supported by Linux.

WiFi

The WiFi chipset used in the IdeaCentre Q190 bases on the RTL8188E. This chipset is not yet supported by older Linux version (see open bug report). However, a support for this chipset is envisaged for Linux kernel version 3.10.

Until now, the chipset is not recognized by the kernel:

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8179] (rev 01)
 Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:0179]

Ethernet

Alternatively, the Desktop PC has to be connected with an USB WiFi dongle or by the available Gigabit Ethernet port:

04:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller [10ec:8168] (rev 07)
 Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:366b]
 Kernel driver in use: r8169

The Gigabit Ethernet is fully supported by the r8169 kernel module and gets initialized automatically during the booting of the kernel:

r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
r8169 0000:04:00.0: irq 42 for MSI/MSI-X
r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: RTL8168evl/8111evl at 0xffffc90004082000, aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff, XID 0c900800 IRQ 42
r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: jumbo features [frames: 9200 bytes, tx checksumming: ko]

Sound card

The integrated Intel sound card

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)

is recognized automatically

snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: irq 45 for MSI/MSI-X
input: HDA Intel PCH HDMI/DP,pcm=3 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0/input7

input: HDA Intel PCH Front Headphone as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0/input9

and supported by Alsa:

 0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xc0710000 irq 45

Processor

The Q190 is equipped with an Intel Celeron 887, which has two cores, each one with a speed of approximately 3000 Bogomips:
