Review of Linux Compatibility

The mouse and keyboard set MK520 from Logitech is supported since Ubuntu 12.10 automatically, including all the function keys.
The set consist of the Logitech mouse M310 (1x AA battery needed), the Logitech keyboard K520 (2x AA batteries needed) and one USB Unifying Receiver for the wireless connection.

The USB Unifying Receiver has the USB ID 046d:c52b

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver

and is automatically recognized by the Linux kernel when plugged in:

usb 3-2: new full-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd
usb 3-2: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c52b
usb 3-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
usb 3-2: Product: USB Receiver
usb 3-2: Manufacturer: Logitech
logitech-djreceiver 0003:046D:C52B.0004: hiddev0,hidraw1: USB HID v1.11 Device [Logitech USB Receiver] on usb-0000:00:14.0-2/input2

Mouse and keyboard have a on/off switch at their bottom and top, respectively. If the devices are switched on they get initialized by the Linux kernel automatically:

logitech-djdevice 0003:046D:C52B.0005: input,hidraw2: USB HID v1.11 Mouse [Logitech Unifying Device. Wireless PID:1024] on usb-0000:00:14.0-2:1
input: Logitech Unifying Device. Wireless PID:2011 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb3/3-2/3-2:1.2/0003:046D:C52B.0004/input/input12
logitech-djdevice 0003:046D:C52B.0006: input,hidraw3: USB HID v1.11 Keyboard [Logitech Unifying Device. Wireless PID:2011] on usb-0000:00:14.0-2:2

K520 keyboard and M310 mouse have a LED which emits green light for several seconds after switched on, to indicate that the battery status is sufficient.

Most function keys are supported automatically under Ubuntu (12.10 LTS), i.e. multimedia keys to control the sound volume and to switch tracks in the media player (i.e. play, next track, previous track). Furthermore, keys for web browser bookmarks, calculator, web browser home, forward, backward, and email are automatically configured. Other function keys are programmed to switch between programs and to open the dash.

Additional status info for keyboard and mouse (e.g., battery status) can be shown by the program Solaar. This program is not part of the Ubuntu distribution, however, it can be installed via Ubuntu’s package management system by adding its repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:daniel.pavel/solaar
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install solaar

Alternatively, on can download the source code of the program from it’s Git repository:

Solaar shows the power status of connected Logitech equipment in the menu:

and allows paring and unpairing between the Logitech Unifying Receiver and mouse of keyboard:

After booting it is not possible to fill in the Kuhbuntu Password with the K520 keyboard because the button is not working.
