Review of Linux Compatibility

The Netgear N600 is a USB 2.0 WiFi stick with the model name WNDA3100. The Stick is available in three different version, each one having a different USB ID

WNDA3100v1 – USB ID 0846:9010

The version v1 of the WNDA3100 uses an Atheros AR9170 chipset and has the USB ID 0846:9010:

Bus 1 Device 14: ID 0846:9010 NetGear, Inc.

This version of the stick is automatically supported by the Linux kernel since kernel version 2.6.30.

WNDA3100v2 – USB ID 0846:9011

The version v2 of the WNDA3100 has the USB ID 0846:9011 and uses a Broadcom chipset

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0846:9011 NetGear, Inc. WNDA3100v2 802.11abgn [Broadcom BCM4323]

There are currently no Linux kernel drivers available for this WiFi stick. However, it is possible to use the windows drivers of the WNDA3100 in Linux together with Ndiswrapper. In this case it is necessary to use the correct version of the Windows drivers, i.e. 32bit or 64bit corresponding to the used Linux distribution. Advanced Linux knowledge is necessary for the The Ndiswrapper configuration. The configuration steps are described at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1964173.

WNDA3100v3 – USB ID 0846:9014

The latest version of the WNDA3100 has the USB ID 0846:9014:

Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0846:9014 NetGear, Inc.

It bases on a Mediatek chipset. This version of the Netgear N600 is currently not supported under Linux.

  • Darkcoder says:

Actually there are 3 hardware versions of this adapter:
    WNDA3100v1 – Atheros AR91xx works on Linux.
WNDA3100v2 – Broadcom. Maybe works with ndiswrapper
WNDA3100v3 – Mediatek. Apparently ndiswrapper doesn’t work with this one either.

      Hello Darkcoder,

Thanks for this hint. We added the information for all three versions of the Netgear N600 to the hardware description.
